Setting Up a Home Ping Pong Room

One of the reasons for the continued growth of table tennis is the ability of many players to set up a ping pong room at home. You can choose a butterfly tennis table of whichever style suits your home once you have decided on a space. For most people, an existing game room or garage is the most likely spot. The key is having enough room so that you can play without obstruction. It will have a significant influence on whether or not you end up having fun or feeling frustrated. Room size does not equate to the actual playing area because you lose a considerable chunk of space to the ping pong table.

A regulation size table tennis table is nine feet by five feet, so you need a room that comfortably exceeds those dimensions. If you are playing singles games for the sake of fun with family and friends, you'll want to have at least six feet behind the table on either end. On the sides, allow about three feet, so you have room to move as you play. You can get away with slightly less if you don't mind working around furniture or wall now and then. If you want to play doubles, the available space around the table needs to increase by three feet on each end and two feet on the sides.

Intermediate and advanced players require more space to enjoy the game. Exactly how much additional space is required will depend on the players and their styles. Also, a walled-off room feels smaller than a similar size playing area in an ample space. Tournament play often is held in playing spaces 40 feet long by 16 feet wide, and only some at-home spaces will approach those generous dimensions. If the area is smaller, it will impact the play, and the players will be bouncing against walls as they engage in intense matches. But if the choice comes down to p[laying or not, most players will adapt.

Lastly, don't forget to consider ceiling height and the height and location of any overhead lighting in the room. If the lights hang too low or the ceiling isn't high enough, taller players with high follow-throughs may have some unintended mishaps. If possible, recessed lighting, well placed, is the best option and reduces the chances for any accidental hits. Low ceilings impede the ability to play lobs unless you allow some hots to make contact with the ceiling. Whatever the situation with the room you have available, take some measurements, and think things through carefully before you order a table.
