Reunification Therapy

Reunification Therapy (also known as Reintegration Counselling or Multi-Faceted Family Therapy/MFFT)

This service is for parent-child contact issues following a separation or divorce. The objective is to restore the relationship between children and a rejected parent, ensure children have a healthy relationship with both parents, and improve the overall functioning of the children.

This approach may include psycho-education, coaching, facilitating contact, and counseling. Meetings will be held with the entire family in various combinations over time, as deemed appropriate. Therefore, it is important that both parents are prepared to engage in this process. Children are helped to feel free to experience a relationship with both parents.

In most circumstances, the parents must provide a court order for this service, any existing Parenting Plan Evaluation Report, and any other relevant documentation involving the family circumstances.

Views of the Child Reports (also known as Voice of the Child Reports)

Now more than ever, children want to be heard!

This service is a helpful way for children to have a voice in their parent's separation/divorce court proceeding. It provides the parents and court with the child(ren)'s views and preferences in relation to family matters, often promoting settlement negotiations. This service is relatively non-intrusive, inexpensive and brief (approximately one month), and can be court-ordered, or agreed upon by the parents.

The process typically involves reviewing relevant documentation and conducting interviews with each child over several weeks. The child(ren)’s views and preferences are canvassed about a number of subjects within the context of the separation and divorce. A brief Report is then completed, and provided to the parents and, if applicable, their counsel and court.

I accept self-referrals from parents in the midst of a parenting dispute. Family lawyers and other community professionals may also make referrals for this service.

The steps involved in this process include information gathering through interviews, reviewing documentation, conducting observational visits, arranging psychological assessments if deemed relevant, and conducting a disclosure meeting where I will present the Parenting Plan. The parties are encouraged to reach a settlement. Otherwise, the parties may request the writing of a comprehensive Report that can be filed for use in court.

A Parenting Plan Evaluation takes approximately 40 to 60 hours and between three to four months to complete. However, this time frame varies, depending on the family's particular circumstances and if a Report is requested.

Parenting Plan Evaluations (s. 30)
Parenting Plan Evaluations (formerly known as custody and access assessments)

This service is for parents who have been previously unsuccessful in resolving parenting issues in the context of a separation/divorce.

The Parenting Plan Evaluation identifies the needs and best interests of the child(ren) and the ability and willingness of each parent to satisfy the needs and best interests of their child(ren). The Evaluation explores, among other aspects, the nature of the relationship between the child and each parent/extended family, and the co-parenting relationship.

At the end of this process, the parents/their lawyers and the court will be presented with a recommended Parenting Plan setting out the most appropriate parenting arrangement for the child(ren). This Plan will include a recommendation on which parent should be given decision making responsibility (if not both), and the parenting time of each parent.
