Dutasteride is a medication used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. It works by inhibiting the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a hormone that plays a role in the enlargement of the prostate. Dutasteride is available in brand-name and generic versions. It's not currently available in the United States, but can be prescribed "off label" by your healthcare provider. Generic dutasteride is covered by most Medicare and insurance plans, but some pharmacy coupons or cash prices may be lower. The brand-name version of dutasteride, Avodart, is expensive and not covered by most insurance plans. If you're paying out of pocket, talk to your healthcare provider about the possibility of getting a generic version. Dutasteride is a prescription medication. It comes as an oral capsule. Dutasteride is usually taken once daily with or without food. When dutasteride is used to treat BPH, it may take up to 6 months to see the full effects. When dutasteride is used for hair loss, it may take 3 months or longer to see the full effects. Dutasteride can interact with other medications, vitamins, or herbs you may be taking. An interaction is when a substance changes the way a medication works. This can be harmful or prevent the drug from working well. To help avoid interactions, your healthcare provider should manage all of your medications carefully. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all medications, vitamins, or herbs you’re taking. To find out how this drug might interact with something else you’re taking, talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Examples of drugs that can cause interactions with dutasteride are listed below. Taking dutasteride with these drugs can increase the levels of dutasteride in your body. This raises your risk of side effects from dutasteride. If you take ritonavir (Norvir) with dutasteride, avoid taking more than 2.5 mg of dutasteride per day. Dutasteride may cause side effects.
