Database Design and Development | |
Database design begins with a conceptual data model and ends with a logical schema specification; this will decide the sort of database system required (network, relational, or object-oriented). After creating a conceptual data model, database designers who are experienced with relational databases and SQL may be inclined to jump right to implementation. However, converting a relational representation to SQL tables in this manner does not always result in a database with all of the desired features, such as completeness, integrity, flexibility, efficiency, and usability. During the information-gathering stage, make a list of everything you find. Each entity's attributes should be documented. Candidate and primary keys should be chosen. Ascertain that each entity's non-key properties are fully operationally dependent on the primary key. Create a first ER diagram and go over it with the right people. (Always keep in mind that this is an iterative process.) For multivalued properties and repeated groups, create additional entities (tables). Fill in the ER diagram with these additional items (tables). Consult with the right people.
