Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) | |
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA, molecular weight 292) and its salts are aminopolycarboxylic acids that effectively chelate calcium ions in blood specimens. Chelation of calcium or removal of calcium from the reaction site will block and terminate the endogenous or exogenous coagulation process, thereby preventing the blood specimen from clotting. It is suitable for general hematology tests (usually its potassium salt EDTA-K2 or EDTA-K3 is used for routine hematology tests), not for coagulation tests and platelet function tests, nor for the determination of calcium ions, potassium ions, sodium ions, iron ions, alkaline phosphatase, creatine kinase, and leucine aminopeptidase, and for PCR tests.EDTA-Li2 can also be used as an anticoagulant and can be used in most biochemical tests.
