Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in, leading to a lack of sufficient water for normal bodily functions. This imbalance can negatively impact the body’s ability to regulate temperature, remove waste, and maintain overall cellular health.

Common symptoms of dehydration include excessive thirst, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, dark-colored urine, dry skin, and muscle cramps. In moderate to severe cases, individuals may experience dizziness, rapid heartbeat, confusion, low blood pressure, and fainting. Children and elderly individuals are at higher risk due to lower fluid reserves and may show symptoms like irritability, dry tongue, sunken eyes, or reduced urine output.

The main causes of dehydration include inadequate fluid intake, especially during hot weather or physical activity. Other contributing factors are fever, excessive sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, and certain medications such as diuretics that increase fluid loss. Medical conditions like diabetes and kidney disorders can also increase the risk of dehydration.

If left untreated, dehydration can lead to serious complications including heat exhaustion, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, electrolyte imbalances, and in severe cases, shock or organ failure.

Preventing dehydration involves drinking adequate fluids throughout the day, especially during exercise or in hot climates. Including water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables in your diet and avoiding excessive intake of caffeine or alcohol can also help maintain hydration levels. Monitoring the color of your urine is a simple way to assess hydration—light yellow is ideal.

Early awareness and prompt hydration are key to maintaining good health.
