The Gates Scholarship, established in 2017 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is a prestigious, highly competitive “last-dollar” award designed for outstanding, Pell Grant–eligible high school seniors from low-income U.S. households. Each year, 300 Scholars are selected based on academic excellence (3.3+ GPA), leadership through community service or extracurriculars, and personal resilience.
