American Airlines generally does not charge cancellation fees on most fare types anymore. Instead of paying penalties, passengers who cancel receive a flight credit to apply toward future travel. The exception is Basic Economy tickets, which are not refundable or changeable. The only way to avoid losing money on these is by canceling within 24 hours of booking, as required by the Department of Transportation. Refundable tickets and cancellations caused by AA schedule changes still qualify for cash refunds. Before canceling, always check your fare conditions to understand whether you’ll get a refund or a credit. | |
